Marty’s Botticelli had lots of shrimp and the creamy pesto sauce was interesting yet not overwhelming (it was so “rich” that he ended up taking some home with him). Our bargain salads were on the small side but hit the mark as a starter (especially considering how much of the delicious bread we had chowed down on.) When our entrees arrived, they proved a success all around. All four of us took advantage of the option to add a salad as a starter – John went for house salad while the others voted for Caesar salad. Reaching a decision about what we wanted wasn’t easy because a lot of items caught our attention! Marty decided on the “Botticelli” ($22 – penne pasta with shrimp, mushrooms, pesto and topped with feta named after the Italian artist), John opted for “Tahiri” ($18 – Spicy Moroccan chicken w/ sautéed onions, eggplant, & raisins over saffron rice named after a Moroccan artist), our friend JT went for the “El Greco” ($21 – Whole wheat linguine topped w/ blackened shrimp, chopped tomato, peas and Romano named after the Spanish master), and our other friend and b-day guy, TP, decided on the “Maryland Masterpiece” ($22.50 – a 5 oz crabcake with sweet potato fries). With the special or pasta entrées, you can add a small side salad for just $2 or a Caesar salad for $3. You’ll find 10 appetizers ($8-$12), one or two special soups of the day (usually $6+ for a bowl), half a dozen sandwiches ($8-$12 and many more options at lunchtime), several side salads ($4-$8) and entrée salads ($9-$14), 12 entrée specialties ($18-$30) and 6 signature pastas ($18-$24). In line with the restaurant’s name, all of the menu offerings are named after artists or major periods of art (although figuring out the relationship between some menu items and their name wasn’t obvious to us! ). An energetic, outgoing young woman (the staff is mostly women) greeted our party of four and provided us with a basket of tempting mix of sour dough and dark bread with butter to munch on while we waited for our drinks and perused the menu. There’s also an adjacent bar/lounge with another dining room tucked behind it. Inside, there is a contemporary casual look with bold colors and a mix of booths and tables that sport stylish black linens for dinner while a wall of floor-to-ceiling windows in front provides an airy feel. It’s tucked way at the rear of a new strip mall whose buildings are designed to look like a row of stylish two-story brick townhouses (and there’s a large patio in front for al fresco dining in warmer weather). With the location out in Owings Mills “New Town” and about a mile from the mall, it took forever to talk Marty into finally making the trek here and giving it a try. More than half of those deaths were suicides, while over 40% were murders. According to the Centers for Disease Control, in 2020, more than 45,000 people died from gun-related injuries in the U.S. This emphasis, however, does not accurately reflect statistics on gun injury and death. They devoted significantly less attention to all other types of gun violence. Studying the communications of gun policy organizations from 2000 to 2017, one of us found that gun control groups mentioned mass shootings in 30% of their blogs, emails and press releases, and in 11% of their Facebook posts. Research shows that gun policy narratives often focus on mass shootings while placing less emphasis on more common forms of gun injury and death, such as individual homicide and suicide. A policy narrative typically contains characters – the victims and perpetrators of violence a setting – the location and other contextual details and a moral or solution. Using an approach called the narrative policy framework, we identify the stories that politicians and interest groups tell about the problem of gun violence and how they use these stories to build political support for their policy goals. Trafficking of guns across state lines for purposes both legal and illicit is well documented, and guns used in crimes are more likely to flow from less regulated states into those with stronger gun laws.Īccording to a 2018 study, there are at least 393 million guns in the United States, making it the most heavily armed civilian population in the world. However, the effectiveness of state gun laws is influenced by those of other states. In California, the annual death rate from gun violence is 8.5 per 100,000 residents, compared with the national average of 13.7. This is true for homicides, suicides and accidental shootings. First, stricter gun control laws do reduce gun-related deaths. How, then, could multiple mass shootings occur in California, leaving at least 19 dead and many others injured, in the span of one week? 1 in the country in gun law strength by gun control advocates Everytown for Gun Safety. The overall results are astounding and a pleasant surprise for the band's fans, who likely weren't expecting a new batch of recorded music this quickly. Vocalist Nathan James takes on the daunting task of performing songs originally done by such amazing singers with respect and confidence. The guitar duo of Danny Dela Cruz and Dan Stevens interplay and feel shines and the rhythm section of Phil Beaver and Vinnie Colla is tighter than ever. The band's new lineup is now more gelled and cohesive after having toured the band's third album, writing and recording together for the fourth album, and now the recording of this fifth album. With this in mind we are donating a pound from every copy sold on our webstore to the fantastic charity Women's Aid (), who do amazing work supporting women and young girls," says vocalist Nathan James. Not only to these artists, but the awesome women in all of our lives who have loved us and continue to support us. I love the fire all these women bring to their music and that's what we wanted to say thanks for. Whether it be the unbeatable voice of Whitney, the charisma of Tina, the honesty of Alanis, the intensity of Lzzy, or the control of Amy Lee. Everyone of these artists has inspired me as a performer, writer, singer, or person. People assume that the singers I idolise are bluesy rock men, but they couldn't be more wrong. It's about bowing to these incredible artists and, for me personally, saying thank you for sharing their gifts with the world. "First things first, we know it is impossible to make these songs better, the originals are perfect and the performances legendary, so acknowledging that we weren't even gonna come close to the magic of the originals took the pressure off and we could just enjoy making this super fun album. From putting their own hard rock imprint on pop hits from Whitney Houston, Miley Cyrus, Avril Lavigne, and Christina Aguilera to taking on timeless classic rock songs by Tina Turner, Heart, and Joan Jett, and contemporary rock by the likes of Evanescence, Alanis Morissette, and Halestorm, Inglorious showcase their versatility with the song selections for this covers album. The up-and-coming British hard rockers' new release, titled Heroine, is a tribute to the various outstanding female musicians who have influenced the band either musically and/or vocally. Hot on the heels of the successful February 2021 release of Inglorious' fourth studio album, We Will Ride, their first with the new line-up of Nathan James, Phil Beaver, Danny De La Cruz, Dan Stevens, and Vinnie Colla, the band headed right back into the studio to record a very special new album. However, he is no longer able to work on Harmonia, having recently accepted a job in New Jersey with MuseAmi, a music software startup company, leaving Taube searching for funding to put the final touches on Harmonia. "We've gotten some great feedback," Burnson said. The app is currently available for free on Apple's iTunes store, and Burnson said despite zero notice or advertising, Harmonia has been downloaded more than 2,000 times. Taube writes programs and computer languages, but said that his collaborator, William Andrew Burnson, "is responsible for more of Harmonia's coolness than I am." Burnson came to Illinois in 2007 to pursue a master's degree in music composition, and began working with Taube as a teaching assistant, eventually writing many of the 100,000 lines of computer code (about half the size of the Bible) that make Harmonia work. Teachers can add music, text, images and videos Harmonia can edit music notation and multimedia. It can generate and grade theory lessons using sonorities, Roman numerals or figured bass (chord progressions indicated by letter names, scale positions or inversions) and even discourage students from copying each other's work, thanks to a randomizer that changes assignments to a different key signature for each student. Besides chorales, Harmonia can analyze piano music and orchestral scores. This method is blazingly efficient Taube's Music Theory Workbench can deconstruct Bach's dense, complex chorales at a rate of 19 chorales per second. He created algorithms that detect and identify normative harmonic behaviors (triads, sevenths, inversions, cadences) and use a hierarchical scanning method, searching first for easily identifiable sonorities, making another pass to examine passing tones, then computing a complete functional and harmonic analysis of the composition, including detection of stylistic anomalies. Otherwise, it's just a bunch of videos."Īt the heart of Harmonia is a program Taube wrote more than a decade ago (his article "Automatic Tonal Analysis: Toward the Implementation of a Music Theory Workbench," was published in Computer Music Journal in 1999). If a university wants to have an online academy for music theory, you need something like this. "It's the only way that music theory can participate in massive open online courses. "This is so much better than paper," Taube said. The program can play the resulting harmonies so that the student can hear the notes, and then grade the result or simply provide helpful feedback, instantaneously. Taube's Harmonia application allows teachers to create assignments that students can complete online. However, such assignments can have many correct answers, so grading the results can be tedious and time-consuming. From there, students move on to writing their own harmonies on worksheets, penciling in notes over the sketch of a bass line or a string of Roman numerals indicating the types of chords to be built. These lessons are traditionally taught in part by deconstructing existing compositions, such as Bach chorales - widely considered the canonical rules of harmony and voice-leading. I stepped back into the classroom, and people were teaching theory the same way they did it a hundred years ago."Īt most colleges, music majors spend their first two years learning theory - the formulas for building scales and chords, the complicated rules for moving from one sonority to the next, the laws of physics and the musical conventions that have formed the building blocks of Western musical compositions for centuries. "I had been working in the world of computer music production, where every year something new would come out. "It was like some time machine," Taube said. Taube, a composer who has also designed software for music composition, began working on a music theory program in 1996, soon after he arrived at Illinois and realized that teachers were still relying on chalkboards, paper and pencils. Heinrich Taube's Harmonia application allows teachers to create assignments that students can complete online. We wish it were near the bottom though, since it doesn’t make sense to force users to mouse over farther to access something that used to be located much closer to the Start button. Instead of putting this button at the bottom of the Start menu like in Windows 7, it is now at the top of the menu near your user name. Once again, users also have the ability to shut down, log off, or put their computer to sleep by clicking the power button in the Start menu. The Windows 10 version tries to prioritize access to Metro apps, but thankfully, these can be removed. However, it omits other popular destinations like the Control Panel, which the Windows 7 version includes by default. Like Windows 7’s Start menu, the Windows 10 Start menu gives you easy access to your My Documents folder. This is a welcome upgrade over how searching works in the Windows 7 Start menu. Meanwhile, the Windows 10 search bar pulls any content associated with your search terms from the Internet also, and includes it with the other results. The Windows 7 Start menu’s search bar includes this feature as well, though it only displayed results that it found directly on your computer. For starters, results begin populating automatically once anything gets typed in to the Start menu’s search bar. The ability to search within your Start menu makes a return in Windows 10. On top of that, you can’t even add shortcuts to folders like Music to the Win 10 Start menu, even though the option to do so exists. These, among others, don’t appear in the Windows 10 Start menu by default. The Windows 7 Start menu contains shortcuts to Music, Devices and Printers, My Computer, and other commonly accessed parts of the OS. Is it more useful than the Windows 7 Start menu? No. Once you start making the tiles larger or smaller, the Start menu automatically re-sizes itself to fit your icons. Users have the ability to adjust the size, content, and placement of any of the tiles in the menu. These tiles, which have been grandfathered in from the Metro UI, consist of shortcuts to various apps, including Mail, Calendar, and more. Whenever you click on the Start menu in Windows 10, a group of tiled shortcuts to Metro apps opens to the right of the traditional “All Programs” (now called “All Apps”) menu. Where Windows 10’s Start menu begins to differ is with Microsoft’s inclusion of its Metro UI tiles, which debuted in Windows 8. It’s positioned in its old spot in the lower left corner of the desktop, features a Windows logo on the button, and is your gateway to most corners of your PC. Metro UI tiles live onĪt first glance, the new Start menu looks incredibly familiar. Here is our brief comparison of the Windows 10 Start menu and the tried-and-true Windows 7 Start menu. Yes, you can use both Mac and Windows - here are some tips to get startedīoth versions of the Start menu feature many similarities, but Microsoft touts new advancements that it hopes will make people forget about Windows 8. Windows 12: the top features we want to see in the rumored OS Ranking all 12 versions of Windows, from worst to best We have in fact gotten to the first page of Google searches without running any Google ads in the (8?) months we’ve been with them. They used a basic website template that had proven reliable with their other customers and worked with us through many calls and conferences to tailor it to our vision, and working with them helped me brush up on my html skills and taught me a bit about web design. Our doc and her partner, neither of which know squat about computers, much less web design, had put together at some point in time when having dial-up at home was considered modern and tech-savvy. Patient pop catapulted our online presence into the 21st century. Still, in the next year or so I do believe we will switch over to a different provider once we get a bit more steadily on our feet again. No 20+ y/o established and locally respected practice should be on the sixth page of Google search results, especially when the dentist has multiple degrees and is a true innovator in the field and does incredible work, stays late and works inhuman hours, is bilingual, and is ALWAYS available. I have very little to work with here so any kind of SEO and EMR integration is already a major step forward for us. We've updated our EMR, imaging software, computers, introduced intra and extraoral cameras and CariVu, and a completely new online presence. To be honest, I'm a young Pre-dental intern here and the rest of the office staff and Dr are late boomers/early gen X so the technology side of the practice wasn't very advanced when I came in, which I have been reforming hard ever since. We're still in the first several weeks and we already see evidence of the hostage site and lag/lack of accountability stuff. Thank you so much for your reply, especially since it was a risk regarding subreddit rules. They charge top dollar for decent site performance with low accountability. You'll eventually get frustrated when they can't demonstrate what you're paying for when it comes to bottom line revenue. TL DR: They're a really good (albeit expensive) first marketing step. Meaningful account changes take even longer. Lag time: One of the most frequent complaints from anyone I've talked to has been lag time - takes 48-72 hours to get site changes and edits completed. They're happy to spend your money and drive traffic, but unless they can show you bottom line impact, it's really difficult to determine if your marketing is successful. If they're really good, they'll work with your front office attribution to tie production revenue back to acquisition sources so you can get a true roi calculation ("we know we drove $x") along with some correlation calculations ("we're pretty sure we helped drive $x"). A good marketing company will have all of those conversion points tied into a centralized conversion tracking source and be able to tell you how much you're paying for each. They do a horrible job with validated conversion tracking (Calls, forms, appointments booked). This means you'll most likely take a hit on SEO when you leave. Yeah, they'll export your CONTENT (basically a word doc) but as far as the formatting, non-provided creative, and functionality, you'll start from scratch if you ever leave them. If you create a site on their platform, it's theirs. They're going to be good at driving traffic, especially if you don't have a strong marketing background. They seem to do a good job of pulling in best practices. Site design - They're mobile friendly, pretty, and functional. They have a big team so if someone goes on vacation, you're most likely still going to get an answer because there are 3 or 4 people who can pick up. They have a ton of practices they work with and a lot of the landing pages and messaging seem good/locked in. However, since no one has chimed in and because I have first hand experience working with dentists who used PatientPop, I'll share.and promise not to talk about my company. I was going to not engage because my company is technically a competitor so I didn't want to break any spam or self advertising rules. I saw this come in a while back and no one has answered.
